Wellesley residents can now enjoy curbside pick up for their food waste. The Department of Public Works is partnering with Black Earth Compost to offer a pilot curbside composting program to help divert more food waste from the trash stream. Residents who sign up for this program will have food waste picked up on a weekly basis at their home for a fee. Pricing is based on a tiered fee structure and requires a six-month initial commitment. This program is an alternative to the free RDF food waste drop off program.
The first 250 Wellesley residents to sign up get a free starter kit. Register for this program at Black Earth Compost. Black Earth Compost provides weekly pick-ups on Wednesdays.
Here's how it works;
- Choose a plan. Black Earth Compost offers collection in Wellesley every Wednesday. You will use a 13 gallon bin with a locking lid and wheels.

- Line your bin. This will help prevent the connects from sticking or freezing to the bin. All certified compostable liners are accepted as well as brown paper bags when above freezing temperatures. Liners can be purchased in your account online and will be dropped off during pick-up.
- Sort your food scraps: Black Earth Compost takes all food waste including mean, bones, dairy, shells, soiled paper towels, and napkins. For a full list of what you can compost click here.
- Put your bin by the curb. Put your bins out in a visible spot the night before or by 6 AM on Wednesdays in order for your compost to be picked up.
- Reap what you recycle. All customers receive one (1) bag of FREE compost per year.
Help reduce waste, reuse food scraps and return nutrients to the soil.
